Washing Carbon?

I do not use carbon in any of my tanks and my water is crystal clear. I could read a newspaper at one end of my 300 when standing on the other, and it is 8 feet long. I agree with what has been stated here that carbon is helpful in removing "color" from water like the brown tannins or certain medications, but other than that I don't think it is that helpful. If you keep up with water changes than it should be fine.

overfeeding and/or poor water quality lead to a fish smell.

If that's the case, I'll remove the carbon in my next water change.. thank you all for the explanations..
