Wat should my friend start with

I would probably say smaller SA cichlids with clown loaches. I know lots of people like Africans but I think for a first tank he may get kinda bored of them.
 
Go Africans, tough, colorful, interesting to look at (they don't just lay on the bottom of the tank) and there is a good price range to chose from. Then when he is hooked, sell him your 100g and get at least a 210g. Everyone needs a friend they can sell their old equipment to.
 
If its hard alkaline water def mbuna much easier than haps or tangs.
if soft low ph go with some firemouth,or blue acara. or 1 young male jack dempsey

Yeah I would go with some clown loaches like ewurm said. Get em small and grow em huge!!!
 
I started with goldfish, then went tropical community, then went monster. I recommend this path, but smart people can easily take care of more advanced setups. I just chose this way because I was terrified of the difficulty, but found with research and work that fishkeeping isn't that hard.
 
Do you mean it is just a matter of time before I start over again and go monster?
I have seen the light. It is inevitalble.
