an uncommon payara that looks like an armatus but grows alot smaller. They have distinctive red tails. It's scientific name is Hydrolycus tattuaia.

There are eight payaras:

Hydrolycus armatus
Hydrolycus tatauaia
Hydrolycus scomberoides
Hydrolycus wallacei (not in the hobby)

Rhaphiodon vulpinis

Cynodon gibbus
Cynodon meionactis (not in the hobby)
Cynodon septenarius (not in the hobby)


As for your question, I am very worried that any of these twitchy little silver fish you are considering will just end up inside of the gar's belly. A gar's favorite food are little silver torpedo shaped fish, particularly those from the genus Notropis. Most of the toothy characins look just like that and are generally not recommended for cohabitation with a gar unless the gar is much smaller when you start.
