Aeration with a bubble wand or disk is not necessary if you have good surface movement.

This statement always get's me. To provide the water with sufficient oxygen the surface needs to be "broken" (hense the market for air pumps).

I really never cared for bubblers in tanks but since I have added tanks I've started to change my mind.

What I have started to do is to have mutiple tanks on a cental sump but I don't have any bio material in the sump, instead I use sponges in all of the tanks.

Why?

Well I started to think that if I have a power outage I could just power one air pump and it would circulate the water in each tank and still have the bio filtration.

In my 2200 I plan to have 4 or 5 BIG bubblers to help circulate the water and prevent dead spots.

i use bubble disks on my tank to help with airation, i have heard though that if you have a planted tank that they can be affected

ye they defuse off all the co2 the plants want but does not really make a that big a change in low tech tanks

As stated above in some of the posts, as long as you have sufficient surface agitation from your filters you do not need additional air agitation.
I do not run any air spargers in any of my tanks. They are all filtered by one HOB and one cannister each. This gives sufficient surface agitation for gas exchange.
