Re: is it normal

thanks,i dont think mine has mites, but when i came home there was fesces and sheded skin in his bowl! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You posted this over at redtailboa.net. If your snake passed a large stool in the bowl just 4 days ago and then again today I would suspect that something isnt quite right. My snakes never have soaked in thier bowls and they never left large feces twice in one week. What was the consistancy of the feces?? Color??

What is the EXACT humidity in the cage?? It is not all that uncommon to lose neonate boas to constipation problems and if your having those issues (thus the soaking and crapping) you have....no check that.....you MUST make sure that your snakes home has all the correct things like temp and humidity.

I see boas in water bowls all the time. I saw one at my pet store that fell asleep in her water bowl with her mouth on the edge. Quite a funny sight.
i still think you took a pic of a dead bp,lol.

it also might be going to the water bowl to escape the heat if your tank is to warm. dont place a heat bulb above the water. it chose to go there to regulate its body temop. if its cold it will simply get out and go back to the warm side of the tank. what are your tank temps? if it is having problems going to the bathroom that might have something to do with it also. whats your basking temp, warm side day/night? cool side day/night.

The only time I see my Ball Python in his water bowl is when he is getting ready to shed. Check the temps on the tank, maybe he is too warm and is just trying to cool down a bit.

Good luck!

My boa is also the only out of my 6 snakes to soak.
He will spend a few days in it every couiple of weeks but then stops the soaking for awhile.
Maybe its a boa thing, my temps are correct, humidities ok and hes feeding great. If its worirying you check it out dude, have a close look for mites, but it could be another one of them things.

You may just have one of those animals that likes to crap in the water bowl. If you're seeing him in there and leaving turds that's a big clue. I've had a couple of lizards who were consistent with that (green ig and Dumeril's monitor) but not a snake, at least not yet. So it might be just that which will make cage maintenance a bit easier, but by all means clean out that bowl when you see crap ASAP...warm cage+water+turd=lots of bacteria and STINK!

Humidity could be an issue though. Are you using a screen top? If so you're going to be losing a ton of humidity and he might want to chill in the bowl to hydrate. Something you could try is a "humid hide". I've done this with success for an Argentine tegu in particular. Just something that won't lose humidity like a tupperware/rubbermaid box with a cover, cut a snake-sized doorway out of a side, put in some damp substrate or just moist paper towelling and put it in. Your snake might well enjoy it, and it will help with sheds.
