Well I have the test strips. The nitrites are safe. Ammonia is still in the safe zone but is a shade darker so it looks like ammonia is starting to creep up a little bit.

I hate to give bad news but you need to get a liquid drop kit because those test strips are about as accurate as sticking your finger in the tank and guessing . I would use either the API or Tetra kits. I would not feed much and do enough water changes that your ammonia/nitrites just barely regester, you dont want them to get too high b/c they can mame or kill your fish. After a few weeks of this your tank should settle out and you should only see nitrates, at this point you can lay off thw WC's but keep an eye on your fish because there may be some spikes. If you can try to get either some established filter media or somthing to seed your new tank with (decor, substrate) from a healthy tank, doing so will speed up the cycling process.

Great, thanks for the great advice. I will stay on top of the water changes (just did one) and will get a liquid test kit asap. Glad you told me this before things went haywire. I had a feeling I shouldn't trust those strips...

dude im so glad you posted this thread im going through the same deal right now with my first fw setup in a 75g. i just put in 5 1 inch zebra danios today to hopefully get things going. good luck with your setup man!!:)

You shouldn't have to do but just one w/c of about 50% a week with just two fish..........
