Just squeeze the output tube of your canister while its running and some of the white stuff will come out. No harm to the fish. I even have some fish that eat it.

Funny how much junk grows in the tubes of our filters. I clean mine out with a tube brush every 2 months and its not too bad. Still surprises me how much gunk is even on the clean output lines going back into the tank.
