Water Change Impact on a Cycled Tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This should be done during your weekly water changes to alleviate the issue. When vacuuming stir up the substrate, especially sand, to help release any oxygen trapped that would in turn turn toxic. You wont ever have this issue in the long run
I was only looking for another cause of OPs problem. I always clean my substrate.

Yes, really, based on the first info you gave, which was only that "after about 2 hours my water went like milk, my ammonia test was through the roof."

The "huge water change" itself is not what "broke" your cycle, that's just not how it works. Plenty of us have done this without trouble, and some do it daily. Sorry you had to go through that, but based on your added info, it sounds like you had something else in your tap water that was not detoxified with the Prime, or you did not dose correctly.

Cheers,

This is the link to the water supply I'm my area:

They appear to use chlorine and chloramine,I can't see anything else in there that prime can't deal with. So I am at a loss...All I did was:

Removed water
Moved tank
Put prime in for 700l
Put neutral regulator in for 700l
Put cichlid salts in
And refilled.

I can't see how 4 filters all failed.

Eheim pro 3 2080
Eheim classic 2217
2 moving bed filters

As for the genius that called bs on my water change screwing up my tank...wind your neck in joker...I want to find a reason so it doesn't happen again.

Well hopefully we can help you find the reason. As for winding my neck in, I will not. I call BS on the reason the water changed and still do.

Any idea if your water is well water where you are located?

Im in Ballarat, Australia, like i said the only info i can find from my water board is: http://www.chw.net.au/business/water-treatment

but that didnt tell me exactly what they do to the water, it seems to depend on the initial characteristics.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I did a large water change last night. This weekend I will be cleaning out the filter as part of the move. I decided to transport about 30g of 75g. This way I can re-syphon the gravel and transport it in water, clean on the filter with remaining aquarium water, and have a nice fresh start for when I transport my fish the following day. Not expecting to have any issues, but will let you know.
