water change problem!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I agree, with enough conditioner for 30 gal you'll be fine. It's really like doing a less than 10% WC without conditioner, which is typically no prob.

alright guys, thanks. ive got the tank filled back up and running and havent seen anything wrong yet. for the future though, how much unconditioned water is safe to add to the tank?

That would depend on your chlorine levels...

You guys are NUTS...and walking on eggshells.

Its like putting your dog or cat in an oxygenated capsule so that they'll have the best air, free of pollutants and allergens. You might as well tag diamond earrings onto the fins too, and don't forget to pick up after the fishes poop.

That very much depends on your source water and fish. As some have stated they are okay not using it at all. I personally always use it, better safe than sorry.

i know that in Florida they chlorinate the bejeezus out of their tapwater, so yeah that would have to be treated, but providing the chlorine and heavy metals arent present or hardly present in your tapwater i wouldnt bother...
I've never used it, and my fish so far (knock on wood) have never been ill or suffered ill effects due to the water quality out of the tap...

I guess it just depends on where in the world you live.

cant run the filter though and itll be awhile before i get to go to the store. is 20 gallons of water thats not treated a really big deal for a 220 gallon tank?

No.

i just took out about 50 gallons of water from my 220 for my weekly water change. i normally remove the water, add conditioner, and then add the new water. but i realized that i only have enough conditioner for 30 gallons. is it safe to fill my tank all the way? i cant go to the store or anything for a while.

Look up the water parameters of your city water. This will tell you how much conditioner you actually need. For all you know there is little chlorine/chloramine in your water and conditioner for 30 gallons based on the directions is actually enough for 50 gallons of your tap water.

Directions on water conditioners are based on averages and ranges of water parameters, and simply do their best to be on the safe side of these values. You don't know how much you actually need until you determine your city tap water values.

I do 30-40% WC with no conditioner and never had a problem ever with many different species of fish other than tigs and rays or discus those are the only fish I havent messed with but alot of cichla and different species of gar and catfish
