Water Change Question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
well i use a 1/2 inch clear hose that i got from home-depot about a dollar a foot. i hooked it up to the drain on my fx5. To do a water change all i do is flip a switch and open the valve, about 10 or 15 min later i just unhook it and feed the water straight to the tank from external hose conection. once im done ill add a few drops of stress coat from API and done. i have never had spikes or problems been doing it for years and water stays clear id say just do that. carrying buckets is way to much work for a simple water change. i have found the easier it is to do them the more on top of it i stay if i had to change 15 or 20 buckets a week id reconsider keeping fish at all lol not really but its alot of work

Hey guys this might be kind of a novice question but it's something i'm really interested in knowing to the people who have monster tanks like 300-600 gallons how do you preform a water change on it? Like in my dorm i currently have a 10 gallon a 1.5 and a little tub with a beta in it and to change the water i have around maybe 8-10 gallons worth of empty water containers I take the containers to the shower fill them up with water wait 24-36 hours for the chlorine to evaporate empty out 50% of the water in each tank and replace it with the newer water, next semester i'm moving to a suit and i really want to put a 55 gallon or larger in the common room, I just don't know how I would preform the water change in it would the best bet be should i keep the method i've been doing but keep more empty containers around? I'm just looking for the most efficient method to keep my fish alive especially in the first few weeks of the tank

Hey man what youre doing is pretty good, but you should probably invest in a water conditioner like prime or aquasafe. Theres more pollutants that remain in the water after 30 hours. I believe chloramine has a half life of over 24 hours. And theres also metals etc you need to get rid of, depending on what your water is like.

I use prime when I do WC's on my 120 and 85 gallon with a 5 gallon bucket. If you are using a python make sure you condition your water into a bucket so you're not using twice as much water conditioner then is needed. It gets a little expensive after awhile.
