Water Change Schedule

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My parameter are all fine, but i have extremely hard water and you can smell the chlorine in the tap water. So my thought were if I was to do two changes instead of one the afffect that the chlorine would have on the tank would be demnished. Now I use prime clear up the chlorine every time, but as i said smaller volume should have a small affect on the tank.

If you are using Prime, chlorine won't be an issue regardless of how much water you change.

I believe it was RD who posted in a thread explaining how prime works. The recommended dosage is figured for the maximum amount of chlorine that's allowed in your tap water. most water supplies fall way way short of that. So basically a normal dose is 1.5-2x the dose you actually need. It all depends on your tap water, but most people will have zero issues. Even a regular dose is going to be more than enough.

If its just chlorine in your water take a look at sodium thiosulfate. Its cheap and will remove chlorine but not Chloramines. One pound will treat around 38,000 gallons of water. Depending on the concentration of Chlorine in the water.

+1.....or get Prime in a powder form: Seachem Safe

I think the powder form of Prime doesn't detoxify heavy metals.

I dose Prime directly in my tank just when I start filling it up via the python from the tap directly, no issues. Chlorine dissipates fairly quickly anyway inside a fish tank. If you point the hose so it splashes from above while filling up, even faster. Chloramine is a different story, needs it's dose of Prime.

I believe Prime is Safe but just has the stabilizer added to sustain shelf life, whereas Safe once mixed with water is only good for like 30 days....something like that.
