If you guys could smell the gas that comes off my tap water, you would not dump that directly into a tank of fish.
I have a 75G holding tank with a styrofoam cover over it to keep water from splashing up under the stand. When I fill the tank, I slide the cover to open up a two inch slot for the filling hose. While the tank is filling up, gas comes out of the slot. The smell is so strong it makes my eyes water. However, after a few hours of aerating with Prime mixed in, the smell is undetectable.
I suspect there are quite a few people with public water who have the same foul gas coming out of their tap water faucet.
