Water change temp. question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm not a huge fan of using tap water for water changes but as long as the water is introduced to the tank slowly I don't see a problem with temperiture as long as you avoid extreames and dont dump it in at once.

Ok well I just said screw it, and changed the water using the hose. The temp change was from 80.1 to 78.3 not too bad. All fish seem to be fine, and the fry are still alive.

so you don't treat the water for chlorine?Cooling the water won't kill em,but it can stress them.and so can chlorinated water.

I always treat the water before I put it in with them. I mix the necc. amount of chem with 1 gal of wather, and introduce it slowly as the tank fills up.

I was wondering about this too. When I clean my 30g and 20g I do about 1/3-1/2 water changes. I do it in a washtub in the basement and try to match the temperature of my tank water, its usually not too bad of a difference. When I fill up my bucket of water I just pour my stress coat straight into the bucket while it is filling up. Then I dump it straight into the tank. Is that alright?

I use an inline filter with activated carbon from my utility sink. I adjust the temp and test the output for chlorine. WE don't have chloramines here. My filter completly removes Chlorine from my tap. Our local water is very good from local springs but is very hard.

I change 200 to 250 gallons at a time so no way for me to use buckets. I should get around 4 to 5000 gallons from each GAC cartridge but will change them every three to four months depending on CL tests. Works for me. Nitrates <5 so far. Fish are small though and I am lightly stocked...
You guys should really try this method as using buckets just sucks. If changing water is easy then you are more likely to do it.

Does anyone make some kind of coupler that will screw onto a standart sink faucet? I'm sure if I could find one of these I could rig some sort of hose to it?

That is great oii
That sounds like a great setup gasser.I'm going to look into it.
And yes they do make couplers that'll hook up to the faucet. There is waterbed filler kits that come with an assortment of diff couplers.

I rigged up a deal off the sind. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and look for a dishwasher hook up kit. I have a deal that is a quick disconnect. It cost a little over $9.00, but it is nice. On part screws into the sink and can stay there all the time. The coupler hooks to it and has hose thread. It is a quick connect and disconnect. Works real nice. If you use a waterbed fill kit, you can siphone too.

Looks like I need to take a trip to the home depot, or the nearest big sur waterbed store. (thats what they call it here)
