Is it ok to use hot water from the faucet to warm up the cold water in a water change? I have heard rumors that water that goes through the water heater picks up some minerals which could be bad for your fish.

Currently I fill a 55 gallon drum and fill it with cold water (before it goes
through the water softener and hot water tank). I then add water conditioner and a heater to warm it up to 75 degrees then pump it into the 125 gallon tank.

Wonder if I could get rid of the 55 gallon drum and just fill from a facuet close by with water already at 75 degrees.

Thanks for reading.

Mick

If the heated water goes through the water softener I wouldn't use it. If it's just hot water (and not softened with the softener) then it should be fine. Heaters aren't the problem, it's the softeners.

I used water that came from a water softener and never had any problems. Why do you not like softeners??

Because too many of them use one of the several salts that can be harmful to fish. Most people don't have a clue what kind of salt their's uses and it's not all the same. I say not to use water softener water to be on the safe side.
If it's working for your fish, then good :-)

I have so called city water. So I do add Prime. i do weekly water changes with a Motoro ray and thought i might be able to reduce the time involved.

Thanks for your opinions.

I think you should be fine as long as you dechlorine the water... Is your ray big or small because small fish(young fish) tend to go into shock more than an older fish

And most people don't know how softeners work. :naughty:

The salt is ONLY used in regenerating the zeolite of the softener then rinsed clear. NO salt goes to your supply water, hot or cold.

Either salt can be used successfully in the aquarium hobby (calcium chloride or potassium chloride). I prefer potassium chloride as I can use the water for plants and the water from my tank can go to my yard when I do a water change. I'm sure there are some fish that don't prefer soft water but most will live in it just fine.
