I have my spraybar from the XP3 underwater but what should I do when I'm doing water changes that get the water level below the spraybar

i dont think it matters if the output goes above the waterlevel

The water level doesn't have to be above the spraybar.
The xp3 on my 125g keeps pumping even with the water level barely above the intake during water changes.
You don't have to do anything.

I always shut the filters off during water changes. Then you don't have the added splashing of water.

when you say shutting it off; do you mean pulling up the lever?
or unplugging it?

I leave the filters running.

I leave mine running because it keeps the water well oxygenated and seems to lower the stress of the water change. I shut off my emperors and penguins but only because they stop running pretty quick anyway.
