Water changes causes my aro to shed

its doing fine, its staying at its usual spot on the top, i only changed water today cus it was acting up before, it started jumping and banging it self on the glass. So i went to check the ammonia, and it was pretty strong, so i had to do a 50%, but i dont know why it was shedding for. Must be the water.

This problem sound be corrected first before considerations for anything else. Why did you have high ammonia? By adding untreated tap water to your tank you can be adding ammonia in the form of chloramine, definetely get some kind of water conditioner, I would recommend Prime made by Seachem, which will also detoxify the ammonia in the tank.

Back to your ammonia issues, how long has the tank been set up? What type filter are you using? Have you also tested for nitrite levels which are more deadly then ammonia?

What are the exact readings of your ammonia? How much did the level drop after the 50% W/C?

yeah, you should treat the water with Seachem Prime BEFORE you add it to the tank since your tank is only 55g. Also, add some salt after you do the water change, it will help build up the slime coat on the fish

If the shedding is what I think it is, either you have an ammonia burn or PH burn.

Your tank must be pretty new and have not cycled maturely..

If you have soft water and change a lot at teh same time the PH-value can go up and down like a jojo. Just becuase soft water easaly changes PH very easy. You can use kalk (i dont know the english word but i think it is chalk) to stabilize the PH- Value in the tank. And if you change smaller amounts of water, like 20% and more often. This can be a precuation to prevent the fish from losing the coat.
If the aro loses his slimecoat his more open to be attacked by fungus.

It could be a cloramine/ chlorine problem like the one I posted. The fish can start losing fins. Treat the water in buckets before adding it to the tank.
