Water changes for 300 gallon+ tank in basement questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Laundry sink, floor drain, toilet.
I don't have a toilet in my basement but I do have a floor drain and a laundry sink. This summer have gotten into attaching a hose to my pump and running the water out the basement window to the grass in the back yard. The big tank is located practically underneath one of the windows.

Cool. I always think that a hose of water going into the sump would have A higher chance to kill the sacred B.B.

I have a well. I also live in western NC mountains. My water is very clean.

I would say it may be of some concern to someone on a municipal water source.

I also do cold water changes, which a lot of people disagree with.
I’ve found that the fish seem to love it and in some instants it kicks in spawning activity.

That’s cool. I can understand how it would simulate a rain and it could cause spawning. I’d say if it works for you, go for it.

I don’t think it would work for my set up, so I typically match or make my new water slightly warmer. Especially when I am doing 70-80%.

In regards to the op, I have an fx6 that I have an extra return valve, with a hose attached to it. I run the hose either into the sink or out the door to water my wife’s plants and or the lawn. Then I have an rv drinking water grade hose that I have run from a sink faucet that fills the tank while it is also emptying. I point it away from the intake of the fx6 and typically I dose more prime than necessary. Typically at least double. I’d rather use too much than not enough. I changed out 150 gal in 35 mins today from set up to teardown. (I timed the flow rate so I would know how much I was changing).

How would you refill it? Hose I assume, but into tank or sump?

I don’t know about yall but I’m gonna tell yall how I fill my tanks.
I have a 45 gallon trash can that I fill up from the tap then I treat and aerate it for 10 minutes then I use a little pump connected to a hose to pump the water into the tank.
Does it take longer? Yes however I find it to be worth it.

What I’d do (I’m planning to do it once I upgrade) is get a stock tank, for you around 150 gallons, and simply keep it around for water changes. Sure it takes up space but you’ll be able to pretreat water beforehand.
