Water changes for big tanks with cichla

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I change 200 gallons on my 600 every week.

Water is pristine.

Rally's system is top notch.

I use a chlorine/chloramine filter on my setup and it works great.

Thanks for finding that. Since then the system has grown and I'm using a different drain method, but the feed method is the same.

Still some of my favorite threads :)

I filtered my drip system through a few carbon filters before it went in to the tank. I left it on all the time in the summer, when the cold water line was still decently warm and shortened it up in the winter so I didn't have to heat so much.

It was very helpful in my 450g. It changed roughly 500g a week gradually.. but that isn't equivalent to a 500g water change.. I also did 100g twice a week.

The ONLY wany to conserve water is by using a nitrate filter (which isn't very practical IMO) or have tons of mechanical filtration before your bio that is cleaned DAILY. Get all of the solid crap out before it has time to do much breaking down...

Fish poo isn't the only thing though that water changes get rid of. Save money elsewhere and change a bunch of water.

I wish i could have a drip system! i dont want to drill holes in my house...
The water company must love me (or hate me). The following happens every Saturday.

750-50%
600-50%
300-70%
75-80%
55-50%
20-50%

Then I take a nap.

:WHOA: Almost 1,000 gallons a week...does all this water go down the drain or do you at least water the lawn, fill the pool, or bathe the kids in it?

I used to use a mag-drive and the wife used to water the plants, but doing that just took way to long. Now I have been using 4 garden hoses and a python to gravel vac at the same time.
Some water gets to the front lawn, and about halfway down my street.:D
