water changes.....how much is too much?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nothing wrong with lots of water changes. Your cloudy water is probably a bit of a bacteria bloom which will not clear up purely from water changes due to how fast the bacteria multiplies.

I've seen small bacteria blooms happen from adding new fish or after my fish have eaten feeders, bacteria eating up the fish juice in the water I guess lol.

Nothing to be really concerned about unless it gets really bad.

thanks again for all the advice, i will do a couple more water changes over the next couple of days, and go out and buy another hob filter ac110 sound like a good one.............you cant have to much filtration

i stand corrected

the link is still good.. it changes once you check your cart

Ive been meaning to do more water changes on my 85 gal tank, but the problem is i go through so much Water Conditioner in doing the changes, its gets pretty expensive to go through a thing of conditioner everytime i do a water change. Is using it necessary though? I am running off of well water and i am afraid if I dont use the conditioner that the chlorine or metals will harm the fish. Any suggestions?

there's chlorine in your well water?
theres conditioner that does one drop per gallon and costs about 3 dollars.

unless we'll cycled a power filter like an emporer 400 or any power filter provides little biological filtration with the fish you have you could get away with it but once they start growing you will need more filtration i would look into canister filters

There are products that will clear up cloudy water but i like to do it the natural way much safer and eazier on the fish i would do a 50% water change every week mabye twice a week till you get more filtration

as for whats is to much i wouldn't change over 80% of the water in a tank unless you have a large sump which will still contain water water changes over 80% on tanks that don't have sumps can harm the bacteria in a tank

If youre using well water from your private well it wont have chlorine in it unless you put it in there.Conditioners arent needed.
You can change 100% of your water daily and it would not affect the biofilter, the bacteria live on surfaces and in the filter, the amount of bacteria floating in the water isnt signifigant enough to affect the cycle.
