So I'm thinking of doing water changes since on a different thread my fish are suffering from ammonia...(will get some kits next week to make sure)
but i am keeping TROPICAL fish. and the water from the sink is COLD water...cold meaning 60's. i can turn off the heater as to not break it but what about the fish?

i can make hot water run by twisting the thing a little further but then this really white water comes out, but then it clears after about a minute. i asked a neighbor an said it's harder water.
why does the water get harder when i make it get hotter?

will my fish be safe if I just put this white warm water(with prime) in my tank?

Uncool to put direct heated tap water....I beleive there is copper in heated tap water....Just do your basic 25-40% water change with regular tap....DO not pur at once(it is impossible), but at a slow rate so the fish would not get shocked....I use my garden hose setup on all my water changes...Been 10+plus years and no problems....

but wouldn't the cold water be bad for the fish and heater?
how bad is copper to fish?

i mean i've seen koi ponds infested with pennys and other coins

ok here is what you do - you turn the knobs on your faucet to match the water temp in your aquarium - do this by running the water over the inside of your forearm and match it to the aquarium water. Then fill a bucket with the water and declorinate it. If the water is cloudy - let it run until it is clear and then fill bucket.

As for prime it says that you can use 5 times the amount recommended if you absolutly needed to. Not saying to add like a teaspoon in for 2g. but yea as for an example.. tonight I did a waterchange.. I took my 2g buckets (found at walmart for 1.20 somthing. I have about 8buckets) and emptied about 15g. I used the hot and cold and found a warmish but not too warm temp by using my forearm like as said above. then (moving 2 buckets at a time) dropped in 4-4.5 drops per 2g. (aka 2 drops per one gal.) then stirred it up, let it sit about 2 min and gently poured in the fresh water near my filter. simple as that and I do this once a week sometimes more because im overstocked.
