Please can anybody simplify.this subject for me.I've heard so many things about it ,is it just what works for you ,every day ,once a week ect.

I know most of you have been through this but please hurmor me

once a week is what I do

I do once a week as well. It depends on a few factors like how stocked your tank is, how much you feed, etc. Do you test your water parameters?

Here's what you do (I'm assuming your tank is cycled):

Get test kits for nitrate and phosphate. Test.

Determine what levels you can live with and replace the necessary volume of water to achieve that.

Example:
Let's say your nitrate level is 40 ppm and you want 20 ppm. You would change 50% of the water (assuming your tap water has 0 ppm).

Example:
Let's say your nitrate level is 80 ppm and you want 20 ppm. You would replace 75%. Or, you could perform 2x50% water changes back-to-back.

Weekly 25-30%, more if I think it needs it by looks or smell. You keep fish long enough and you can tell when you put your nose down near the water how healthy the tank is or isn't.

i do percent twice a week but i do heavy gravel vacs im not into keeping fish poo

i do every day changes of 3g on my 75g tank :)
