Water changes

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hi
i have also kept channa for a number of years, and baloo is correct in my eyes,i would say ive done 6 to 7 water changes this year and my channa are really happy in their tanks, and my pulchra have bred so dont over do it they dont like fresh water.

hey man frankly i only do half water changes once in 3 months... LoL...

Thanx for the compliment and support colin but i don't consider myself successful nor an expert.
most guys in the SGC kno what i know.
i'm just lucky to have found something i have a knack for.
id rather be good at footy looking how much those guys earn ;)
i have only written 4 articles that got published, sadly heavely edited and reduced to 3
the rest is just other ppls work i have translated into english or german
i'm still uncertain how i got so lucky with the pfk artikles, but i did spend the money on more fish :naughty:

Palle is what i consider successful

back to waterchanges
the biggest mistake ppl make is being lazy for some time and then do a big waterchange. adult channa take it badly as you can see by their behavior and darker colour. they are clearly uncomfortable. young fish can die from that kind of stress. the change from one extreme to the next appears to be to much
no cover as you have in bare tanks keeps them stessed and that always can lead to dead channa
you have to rethink everything you ever learned about fish when keeping channa.
i know of ppl who decided to finally clan the algea of their glass and they found the chana had bred
i doubt you will find any other fish like that

to breed you need stale water

also all the posts about sudden channa death are imo all linked to insufficiant tank furnishings and the resulting stress combined with that waterchange you shouldn't have made as big as you did

You mentioned darker colour, I've noticed that some of mine are darker than others. Is this something to worry about then? They all seem to be eating well and I can't say I've noticed the darker ones acting any different to the lighter ones.

having 1channa pulchra, personnaly 50% water change every week.

i would not worry too much mate , you will get diferant shades in the juvies as they are growing , some do appear darker than others , they will settle down in time . just keep the water perameters stable and all will be good .

Once a week I do 50% and gravel vacs on all my tanks. Base your water change schedule on how long it takes for your water to get out of spec.

if you do a big waterchange you will notice your channa going darker in colour.
that is a result of too m ch fresh water and it stresses them and makes your fish feel unwell.
stress causes many channa to darken up
fighting, deceise, changes in enviroment can all cause those changes in colour
find out what is causing it and try to change it
in a fighting pair this can be difficult unless you remove one of them

@tattoedbstrd
as in regards to the 50% waterchanges are you trying to say we don't know what we are taking about?
forget about waterspec with channa
forget everything that applies to other fish

we do and thats why we breed and keep channa with much success apart from the death that are caused by aggression.
and that only happens rarely

hi uli - violentjs fish where only just added to the tank last week and it is a new tank , i think they are still settling in and getting used to the change in water perameters from my tank , iam sure they will settle in very shortly though. i suspect he has not done any water changes as yet on them.

cheers col
