water changes

so ive been doing some researching and saw that alot of people who keep freshwater fish when they do water change they take the water out, put the hose in and fill it up. sometimes when they want the fishes slimecoat to come back they add prime. but most of the time they do it with out dechlorinator. is that ok for your fish and your filtration?

I do my WC every week sometimes more. I take no less then 25% out I will take out up to 50% most of the time. I always refill with tap water treated with dechlorinator that also adds to the slime coat if you touch the stuff you get a slime coat.
You have you use dechlorinator if you have city water or your fish will die. If you use RO water you don't need any water treatment.

my friend lives close to me here in the city and he does waterchanges on his 10 gallon and adds no dechlorinator. he also does waterchange like that to his big tank and hes been doing this for years and years and still not one of his fish has died. he has also moved to acouple of other houses previously and still no prime or stress coated add and fish are all still fine and very healthy. it is very weird and very tempting i want to try it.

if your tap water is just treated with chlorine (not chloramine) then all you need to do is agitate it for an hour before it all will have gased off. and even if you added it directly to the tank chances are it will have gased off before any damage could be done. But if your water is treated with chloramine then water dechlorinator becomes a nessesicity because chloramine does not gas off.



im going to geuss that your water is probably treated with chlorine and not chloramine and this is why your friend isn't having a fish die every week.

I do 2 or 3 small water changes every week and always use Stress Coat....I have used it for 15 years.

I too always use Stress Coat for my changes. If you dont clean your tank enough though, you will notice a film on the glass from all the chems. Nothing an mag-float doesnt sheen off though.

I do a couple smaller water changes through out the week and have never used stress coat or dechlor. That being said I live out in the sticks and have pretty good well water.

I live in NYC and use dechlor just to be safe...but once my bottle runs out in a few months I might consider trying not to use dechlor, the tap water report only mentions chlorine so I was thinking of agitating it inside my tank with my air pump, while all the bacteria thrives in the filter which is turned off

now your thinking the same way im thinking. im gonna try it for sure, i have a good feeling it will work but you just gotta do some research about the water near you.

Just water change, then add the amount of dechlorinator for the amount you re filled with. Water out the tap is not as toxic as the people that sell stress coat and prime would have you believe though...so bear that in mind if your someone that worries that your adding it, whilst a hose fills the tank.
