i have a 120 tank with 7 small (3-4") rbp. i was wondering if 10g daily water changes would be ok for this set up and not be harmful to natural bacteria or the fish. i am only using a fluval fx-5 for filtration.

it would work, but save some trouble and do like 40g once a week. your bio will be in the fx5 (depending on media)

only way of knowing is to measure your nitrate level

Thats actually the best way to do it. Your params will stay way more stable, and there will be less stress to the fish. That is a lot of water to change, though, as it comes out to more than 50% a week. But, as spirit said, the amount of water you change is dependent upon teh difference in your nitrate reading, and your target nitrate reading. I would have to imagine, since the fish are still small, you could get away with 5 days a week. Maybe skip wednesday and saturday or something like that.

awesome thanks guys. its just that my phosphates have been difficult to keep at a consistantly low level. i used kent phosphate sponge and it worked like a dream (if you ever have phosphate problem this stuff rocks!) but it's kinda of expensive. i'l make sure to keep and eye on the nitrates/nitrites as i have live plants as well.
