Water changes

I have this problem, the solution is to fill slowly although i only have a 180. A guy i bought some fish off used a bank of heaters cable tied together for when he did water changes.

I totally keep an eye on water temp when doing changes on my 500. I've run out of hot water before and had to stop filling for 20 min to give my water heater time to catch up.

Ok just wanted to read someone else does it to... I felt as if im the only paranoid one...

I never use hot water, copper lines and sediment build up in the hot water tanks could wipe out a tank full of fish in a heartbeat.

I use straight tap from the outside faucet and it runs through a carbon bottle, during the colder months(probably not feasible for most) I just run the return a bit slower and the fish get use to it long enough to survive till the heaters get to it. I've drop temps as far as 10degs without a problem.

For those that are running larger tanks and are north I would probably get an inline heater and do it that way.

Yea i live in pa and in the winter my outside lines freeze..... Thats y i use my hot water.... I havent had any problems with it doing anything to my fish but with a 300g tank its somewhat hard to put 150g of cold water into the tank i would kill all my fish.... But thanks for the info.....

hmm, i just use water from the outside hose. when you run hot water from your house you are also introducing stuff that's coming off your pipes and water heater.. if you ever tested the GDH of cold vs hot water you'll notice quite the discrepancy.

Very good point Sovath. The total dissolved solids (TDS) from cold water to warm water straight from the tap is huge -- especially with older water heaters. I am currently setting up a 400 gall system (300 main tank, 100+ sump). Water changes will be straight forward: empty sump, fill with cold water, dechlorinate, run a couple pumps & inline heater....water should be warm enough in three hours to recirculate into the main system. I will have an fx5, fluvaG6, air stones, & powerheads running while the sump is off.

For my smaller tanks, I age my water in a 55gall container: pump & inline heater circulating water in the 55gall.

In the winter months I avoid doing 50% WC due to temp differences. If weather is not too cold the. I'll run a 75g WC for my 150g tank.
