Water changes

the water quality in the tank changes from the tap over time. i have known people that didn't do a water change for 6 months then did a big one 50-75% that killed most of their fish. They then say that the water change killed their fish off when it was the lack of water changes over time that did it. i do 50% on most of my tanks, sometimes bi-weekly but always do at least one a month.
