The main reason i asked cause my fish stopped growin and i do have plans of gettin a 120 or bigger by next year but i didnt understand y my fish stopped growin n i was told cause i dont change my water. i ty 4 all the support i am so glad i found mfk's ty 4 the advice n i will deffinitely use it ty again.

First of all, if you're gonna keep all those fish...
You're gonna need a bigger tank... A waaaaay bigger tank!
There is nothing wrong with how often you're feeding (young fish should be fed often), but when you feed a lot, they poop a lot. All that detritus builds up in the bottom of your tank. If it hasn't caused any health problems yet, it will. Just start with those small water changes and your fish will do fine...

Until they grow... they're gonna get waaaay too big for a 46g bow. Time to start savin!

Good luck!

Water changes are necessary to remove Nitrates and replenish trace eliments. Also adding water for evaporated water is bad, water evaporates but the minerals contained in the water do not, so currently your tank has a very heany load of minerals. Plus during water changes you should be vacuuming the gravel in your tank.

Give info on your tank and we can recommend the amount of water changes you should be doing

Tank size--46 gallon
filter type--???
fish type--???
how many fish--???
what do you feed them--???
do you have live plants--???

Then how often do you think I should do one? I try to do it atleast once a month, but sooner if possible.

20 gallon
Whisper 30-60
6 Zebra Danios
TetraMin Flakes - every other day
no live plants

At that bio-load (small zebras?) 50% every two weeks. Big zebras every 10 days.

start doing changes ty mfk's 4 the advice.
cichlidmanjss,
Wow, you've got a pretty heavy bioload and should be doing 1 50% water change per week. For the next two weeks I would do as many 20% water changes as you can but not more than one a day. This will get your tank in shape. After that you can get yourself a routine of one 50% a week.

fishieperson321,
your bioload is relatively small, 25-30% once a month is probably good, you can test your nitrate level though, you want to keep it under 40ppm. If the nitrates are higher then do more water changes. The lower your nitrates the happier your fish will be, I try for nitrates of 20ppm or less in all my tanks.

Keep up the good work. With regular water changes your fish will soon always be happier n active

You only have three more water changes, and then it will be time to start all over again :D

That is what I was thinking. A filter designed for a 60 gallon tank with such a small bio load, I was guessing at every 1-3 months.
