Yup, add the old filter media,but not all of it. What other fishes do you plan on stocking the tank with? If your gonna add some smaller, hardier fishes, add them gradually. After a while, the tank will be cycled, just do more frequent water changes. Get the test kit. At the minimum, get an ammonia test kit. Check it frequently, and do a water change when the ammonia gets above .5 or so.
As an aside, bogwood will acidify the tank some, but plants won't. The best way lower pH is to add filter peat to the filter.

Agreed. When a customer comes to me with that problem, I usually send them off with a dirty filter pad from one of our systems.
