Most UV's are attached to the return hose of a canister filter but you will need to choose a filter that has a low enough flow rate for the UV sterilizer to be able to kill of algae and free flowing pathogens in the water.
I was using a 18w coralife turbo twist with eheim 2217 in my 180G with great results. For your tank you can probably get away with a 9w UV sterilizer.

This link should explain it better than i ever could :)

well like i said im running 2 penguin 300 70g filters, didnt plan on switching to a canister till i get a bigger tank some day... well hopefully i can find a standalone system some were, i hear there is some forget who told me! :(

If you don't want to buy a canister you could just get a powerhead and run the output of it to the uv.

i dont see how a UV light will make your water clear. ive never used it on any of my tanks and id be willing to bet i have some of the clearest water out there. a good filter sock is hard to beat.

ive also ran a diatom filter for that stupid-clear water

Im using a 57w on my discus tank with a rena xp4, 350gph. Been happy with my purchase ever since.

Most GOOD UV sterilizers that i have seen are inline, in which case you would have to change your filtration. I would recommend doing that any way if you are only running hang on filtration. With a 75gal tank consider what load you have and how much you want to stock to determine best filtration. Sump and canister filtration are two of the best ways to go. I use to run two canisters on my 75gal tall. That was until i figured out how to maintain my tanks with proper WC and care.

Also what substrate do you have? Is it a fert? If so, if you were aggressive adding the water back in and stirred up the sediment, i would not be suprised if it took a couple of days to clear up. Chemicals should never be your first choice.

Check your filter pads in your peguins, are they dirty? clogged? saturated with sediment? That happens to my other filters and after a rinse they clean up the tank nicely.

After reading my message i wanted to make sure you knew i wasn't trying to sound like an ASS!! haha

If your looking for a cheap canister filter, magnum worked well for me. BUT my marineland heater blew up in my tank... soo... depends on their product line?

BTW WHAT IS IN THE TANK?
