I live close to a wetland area some large patches of open water I was wondering if it would be a good idea to collect water from there to help start the cycle on a tank and possibly even some substrate for a nutritional layer at the bottom of a tank?

Why dont you go one better and use these large wetland patches as your filter? ie Just have an automatic flow through water system. Just make sure any of your exotic baby fish or introduced diseases cant escape into the wetlands.

Sooner or later you will get something very unwelcome although it might work fine for a while. Environmental changes, seasonal changes and the coming and going of various natural pests, chemicals, farm runoff etc. will, I think, eventually bring unfortunate results.

I trust the mountains and the rain more than the retards at the waterboard... As long as your taking water away from the beaten path, no probs, been doing it for years...

Like perch then?

The guy was some kind of ranger, he said it was well depressing, breeding and nurturing the little critters to release them and watch 'em stare dumbly at the large eagle shaped shadow rapidly approaching... like it might wanna be their friend...you've got a hole USE IT...his words 'too dumb to live'.
