To answer your question, if that tank was filtered by canisters only I would add a bubbler, thats why i ask saying if he had one already gas exchange wouldnt even be an issue. Typically I think he would be fine regardless of the lid situation, but if there wre lids, and the lids did seal and the air above the tank was still then he could have an issue if the tank heated up unexpectedly or if he had to raise the temp to treat illness if he has no bubbler.
My sump isnt covered at all, but despite that I put an airstone in the sump to be safe. I also added an auto top off so that way water evap wouldnt be an issue between water changes
