Old idea new thread, I am trying to build a sieve that is cheap, efficient and low maintenance.

Most of the commercially available models are built for Koi ponds.20181014_172742.jpgTest screen 1
300 micron SS mesh.
500 gph
12" wide
Flow is too weak to sluff waste off screen. 20181021_085949.jpg
Narrowed a channel slot but the water just Vs and is uneven. Still the screen length is too long.20181020_143844.jpg
Nice starter weld-on 4 project.
Built a smaller case, with a deeper inflow chamber.

This one is 12" tall x 5" wide 20181021_085949.jpg

What is it you are trying to achieve with this?

Trying to pre filter, the water prior to a fluidized filter chamber. With something low maintenance.

Mostly excess 1/8" cichlid pellets.

I'm taking it that your fluidised chamber is you bio side, yeah?

I set it up on my basement tank. Works great at first, the screen will need to be sprayed out daily, I can tee a spray nozzle off my mag pump, better than packing a plugged filter sock to the kitchen.

I don't really understand what you are trying to do which would be better than the standard.......
1. Good mechanical filtration....
2. Followed by bio....
3. Pump back to tank.

If you are running filter socks AFTER your bio then that would suggest to me that you are getting a lot of crud coming out of your bio side, when in reality your first stage of mechanical shouldn't be letting any crud into your bio side in the first place.

And you say a lot of uneaten 1/8" pellet's are finding their way down there. I'd be attacking that problem first. Food's expensive enough as it is without most of it flooding into your sump.

I'm thinking what would be easier that changing out cheap filter floss every other day on your mechanical side and having your pump on a timer so it switches off for 10 mins or so at feeding times every morning or whenever you feed.

The free style fish feeding, keeps my wife happy, feeding all the little babies that got beat to get something to eat.

The fish also eat naturally grown algea, all day long.

I should add that the fluidized filter is a prototype fluidized algea ball, self sluffing algea scrubber, hence post filtration. 20181023_161303.jpg
24 hours still at 75% flow thru.
The sieve will eventually dump into a filter sock. If I can keep the flow through it low enouph to prevent it from overflowing.

This is a the 20 watt scrubber. The sieve is going on a new sump build. The white diy floss container. Plugs up too fast.

Going on 3 days , It gets sprayed of twice per day. This is about an hours worth of fish poop.

The back side after 4 days, it plugged completely. My old filter floss tray would plug and overflow after 3 days. The screen cleaned up quick under the kitchen sink.

I put in a full size screen for the day.20181108_050225.jpg
