Last year we had a cld spell of negative temps. at night for about a week. I didn't need to thaw any ice, I just did it so I could actually see the water moving. I boiled two big pots of water and just poured it near the top of the ice dam. It melted down a couple of inches and thats all that was done. I would think w/a extended cold spell (7-10) days, I would def. pay really close attention to it. The last thing you want it the winter is ice to collect and divert water out of the pond frying up the pump. I have never lost a fish since I employed the continous year round running. Some people fell running the pump makes the water even colder, I disagree.

Thanks again, you just helped answer another question I had. We can definitaly get some cold spells here. And I was wondering how a waterfall was going to hold out against freezing over.
You also said you never lost a fish since you employed the continous year round running. What kind of problems did you have before that? I would like to run mine all year round also.

Thank's for sharing, I'd definitaly say it's one of the best I've seen also.

Doubledragon - The problem I had in the past was w/my cow trough heater. I went away on vacation for 10 days and I shorted out. It allowed the pond to freeze over solid and trapped CO2 in it. That short little spell of solid ice cause me to loss 2 Imported ($85.00) Koi. I no longer have Koi or use the small heater to keep a hole in the ice.

Chester... the second falls look awesome. How deep is the pond they fall into. It looks concrete and deep.

Well, let's see...There is the big pond with the pink boulder waterfall, the medium pond with the other waterfall, the pond by the fence with another waterfall, the pond by the deck - no waterfall, the pond in the train bed with a short waterfall, the pond at the shop with a waterfall, the new turtle pond that is 2 ponds - so I guess another waterfall...oh - the pond in the front yard....ummmm - I know I am forgetting some. Then there are the free standing fountains.......
