My 20 loses about 1-2 inches a week due to the hob cutout being a bit too large, did a better job the on the 10g shrimp tank and it doesn't seem to lose any water. All it is is evaporation.

Yeah my 40 gal does it too sometimes i lose enough for it to drop below my HOBs intake and it makes a horrible sound, luckily i usualy notice it way before then lol.
You can use a humidifier it will help or you can use one of these http://store.laundrylist.org/Robbins_Wooden_Clothes_Drying_Rack_24_p/20-002.htm Put one near a heating register or sunny window and you can dry your clothes and add humidity to your house.
Even with a lid.. there will be evaporation..
My 60 gallon loose an Inch every 4/5 days with a canopy covering....
it has a 3 x 2 hole for the wires/ filter hose from the canopy....
Say that i make water change on Sunday.. by Saturday.. about 1in of water is gone.. sometimes two if its been a cold week..
If your tank doesnt have a huge water puddle on the floor/carpet.. then its just evaporation..
