I have gone through 4 or 5 heaters in the last couple of years from not turning it of when changing the water leaving it exposed and when the water hits them again heater done glass breaks from temp change bullsh*t

What brand of heaters are those? Also what is the temperature difference between the tapwater and tankwater? Any large differences may cause the heaters to break along with exposure of heater glass without water while it is on. You'll have to always remember to switch off the heaters when doing any tank maintenance.:)

I was once doing a water change and smelled something odd so I started to wonder....somethings burning!?!? What the hell could it be??!!.....next thing you know the plastic suction cups were melting in my tank!!!

some lessons you gotta learn the hard way...hope it doesnt happen again!

YIKES.

I am always afraid of that happening.
I scoot the heaters down as the water levels drops so they are always submerged.
Then when i add water, i make sure its the same temp.

marineland stealth: shatterproof and turns off when over heating.

When I started in this hobby and didn't invest in decent heaters I had the break and kill my fish lately I have been using stealth heaters they are great only had one problem it didn't shut off during a water change and started to bulge but didn't kill my fish
