When I started in this hobby and didn't invest in decent heaters I had the break and kill my fish lately I have been using stealth heaters they are great only had one problem it didn't shut off during a water change and started to bulge but didn't kill my fish

Yep..had the same thing happen to me too. Contacted Aquarium Systems and they sent me a new one.

But recently just got a titanium heater, actually 2- WON bros and a Aquamedic..so far no problems yet from the WON bros, but the aquamedic had to send it back to them. Waiting on the repair/replacment heater. Mind you, these heaters are controlled by a separate controller and has maintained my tank at 80F which is located in the basement. Past 2 weeks weather here in the east has been pretty cold..teens-20's.

marineland stealth: shatterproof and turns off when over heating.

Just bought one today, I think I will go get a few more . . . . .

What happens with a glass heater when you forget to unplug it?

vac ... dump ... vac ... dump ... vac ... dump ... fill ...
BANG ! ! !

 :nilly: Doh !!!

I usually unplug the heater 20 minutes before a water change, pour the water and wait another 20 minutes before I plug it back in. Has worked fine so far, no problems as of yet.

Once I burnt myself during a water change because I forgot to unplug it, and when I was moving the siphon around my hand hit the exposed bottom. Ouch!

Hey I just realised that when I was talking to the tech support at drsfostersmith, I had the top part of my heater out for 1 second but is that safe?

There's some wierd fumes underwater..is my plastic cage around the heater melting?

I always wait. When exposing them to air/taking them out or putting them back in.
Unplug.
Wait a while before removal.
Put back into tank.
Wait a while before plugging the heater back in.

I've never lost a heater from regular water changes this way.
