nuh uh, all of the filter containers are plastic and glass. I use Prime every time I add tap water, even if it's just the 2 gallons. I prime the added water, before adding.
The water from my tap smells chlorine-ish, but nothing other than that. I am feeding them a mix of Hikari excel, and hikari Gold. The fish themselves are making very little waste, they are still tiny. I feed what they can eat in roughly 30 seconds, and do that 3-4 times a day. very little if anything hits the bottom.
Since this is a relatively new setup, I'm beginning to suspect something I have in the tank is all wrong.
The mechanical filtration is all completely brown, which for the short time it's been running seems odd (2 weeks since new filter media added) since there's practically no waste at this point. I'm also noticing more of what I'm calling brown algae, things are just getting a brown tint, and are slimy.
I'm running 2 T5 HO 60" bulbs, 1 10k and 1 Acintic. Maybe the reef lighting is wrong for this water, causing weird **** to grow??
Temp is set to 84 on my Eheim Jager 300w - but the thermometer always reads at 79-82. Turning the heater lower makes the temp run in the mid 70's.
If you put your nose near the water, it smells like a hot old penny.
The tank used to be a saltwater tank, back in the day. I cleaned the bulkheads as thoroughly as I could, but maybe there was something left over in there. I soaked the whole thing in vinegar for a week.
The lace rock (200 lbs) had yellow stuff all over it when I put it in the water. I searched these forums and other people had said it was ok and the stuff would die soon afterwards. It did within a week. Maybe the smell is from that stuff decomposing??
The bottom is all aragonite, roughly 4" of it. It's way too much and I plan on removing a lot of it. Maybe that has something to do with it?
PH is 7.8, all other numbers near nil.
I'll continue to cycle a bunch of the water every few days, I guess if I had something to worry about others would know about this smell. I'm sure I can eventually cycle it out.
