Hi to all friends.
I am a newbie and would like to post my experience and pictures of building my pond, that I owe to much to the useful info I got from your posts, but I have to wait till I fullfil my min.quota, inorder to be able to post pics.

I have 7 pots of water lilies in my pond and I am very much satisfied of their blooming, that summed up to 97 in total, since May. But my naughty koi fish ofcourse take away all the soil out from the pots and that makes the bottom so dirty. I have tried to cover the pots with chicken net but then the new offshoots mass up under the net.

Does any one of you place water lilies in the pond as bare root? Because I have read somewhere that when water lilies are bare rooted, they do not bloom well. Is this true?

Or any other suggestions ?
Thanks

P.S: Hiding the roots under the gravels will not work for me because of the bottom surface of the pond, I can only anchor them.

Welcome....

Whats up w/ the bottom of the pond?

If it is gravel already, you can directly plant the lillies into the gravel. If they need to be in pots, try covering the soil w/ gravel. Koi are diggers by nature, and will continue to uproot things unless they are protected. Maybe try to fill the pots only half way w/soil, add lillies, and backfill w/a couple of inches of gravel.

Can't wait to see your pics.

Thanks Muske;
Bottom is with lots of wrinkels of the liner and sometimes I need to vacuum the bottom dirt and do not want the gravel pieces also make trouble during the vacuum.
The pots had gravel on the surface but that was like peanuts to the koi:)) Can try to fill half of the pot with gravel but then I wonder how the new suckers find their way up?
Worth to try, thanks

I have found that if you feed the koi plenty they don't go looking for other food sources like lilies. I have 6 lily pots in my pond and the koi don't eat them or dig up the dirt at the base of the plant. I feed my koi 2x a day in during the week and 3-4x a day on weekends (summer feeding)- about 15-20 seconds worth each time. I believe it is all a matter of early training.

You may be right abt training hankn. Actually mine do not eat the plants but sometimes they are like naughty boys and when they are joyful and one starts digging, they all do the same thing:)) Thanks

Spank them...

I use clay potting soil and then cover them with some Black stones. The Kois can't move them so they're safe. The only thing that happened was that I had a small pot with Anacharis in the same fashion, but it was knocked over by my dog who decided to take a drink and fell in. :irked:

Benjamin....Does your Anacharis grow better in soil or floating?
