I thought they've known for ages, because there ice caps on the north and south poles of the planet (ice = water)

have they just recently found liquid water, not solid?

Their was never any proof what the ice at the caps (which are frozen only during martian winter) were made of...This discovery is monumental...They recovered the ice and used the instruments of the new rover and found it to be H2o.....
