What is the developmental difference between the two? Is one easier to develop than the other?

Water kok will fluctuate from large to small often and hark kok will stay the same size most of the time. Its all genetic whether they develop it or not and every strain is different. Some strains of kamfa don't always develop a kok until maturity though it might be huge while a lot of zhen zhous will start showing at 2.5" and theirs won't get as big. You have to see pics of the parents if you want to know potential of fish imo.

ik my zz's developed their hard kok really small they were like 2-3"

In general, in a batch of fry with high quality parents that have good/excellent kokgenes, 97% of them will have a hard kok and 3% will have a water kok. This is why water kok's are most sought after.

So the only way to find out if the fry have water or hard Kok is to growout and cull? I have been looking online at these flowerhorn breeders overseas and they are always divided off. I know that will cause the fish to have more confidence ect... therefore their hump gets larger at a younger age right? I wonder if they divide them off as young as 1/2"? I am going to pull a few fry at that size to see if they develop any different than the ones grown up together.

It is possible to tell which ones will develop water kok's at half an inch. Thats how most of the breeders in Thailand, Vietnam, etc know which ones to keep and which ones to cull.
