As for as leaving them on 24/7 doesn't that effect the fish in a negative way, as for as sleeping and rest?

Doesn't seem to. If I were trying to breed I might start cycling the lights on and off to simulate the time of year that they traditionally breed to possibly help stimulate them.

thanx for the info guys seems like everyone is a little alkaline and hard. has anyone tried going acidic and soft to try to induce a spawn? if so did it seem to help? im talkin sax species too now.

Yeah, it helps every time. You'll have almost tripled positive results if you go soft, acidic water. Thats their natural habitat, so it makes sense they would prefer to breed in that...;). Most people just wanna keep them and don't really give it much thought about breeding. It takes the devoted aquarists like yourself to do that part, as its not always easy.

no doubt it wont be easy but what an accomplishment if it were to happen. guess i should get some pikes first though.

my ph in nebraska is 7.8 last time i checked, my tank water is 7.5 or 7.4, driftwood lowered it a bit. i have well water and it is pretty stable though. i do atleast weekly 15% water changes, but most often i do about 25-50% water changes twice a week.

oh wait i don't have pikes lol
