Water problem

My 40gal is clouding up real bad (and real quick) for no apparent reason (?)

Just ran some tests, the results seem okay to me
pH: 7.4-7.6
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Phosphate: 0.5 ppm

I'm thinking of getting rid of the gravel and washing the tank with bleach then sun drying it
Any help appreciated

It's been running for well over a year, only one fish in the tank and I'm feeding it a few times a week
I highly doubt it's because of that
 
Fish excrete ammonia... bacteria converts it into nitrite then into nitrate...

Your test results suggest there is no fish waste whatsoever in the water... that sounds very odd for a 1 year old tank...

I did a major water change yesterday, and now it's so cloudy I can't see the back of the tank
to bleach it is I guess :irked:
 
What color cloudy? White cloudy would suggest maybe you killed off a large portion of bacteria and they are repopulating in the water and have yet yo attach to something.

I think bleaching is the wrong way to go unless you want really start fresh including cycling your tank.

I would double check you readings, some times the nitrates can not work right if not properly shaken. If everything really is 0 then i would wait a few days and do a small water change.

Also what kind of filter are you using, if the cloudyness is from something else you could put some floss or something in the filter temporaily to help clear things up

Better start fresh than hope the water wouldn't kill my fish, it's making me paranoid :nilly:

It's running on an Eheim external filter that does currently have floss in it, doesn't seem like it's helping
 
What color is the cloudy water? If it white cloudy it's most likly benificl bacteria growing like crazy. If you ammoina is 0, nitrites are 0, and nitrates are below 40 then your fish will more then likly be fine.
