Water quality help!

aragonite's presence being "good" or "bad" (in your tank) depends on whether or not the ph & hardness of your tap water should be raised, for the type of fish you intend to keep. because aragonite can raise both, as can other things.
it's best to test your tap water, and research what the fish you want to keep.
 
Play sand is usually too light to be used as tank substrate, it takes a very long time to settle, and most people don't have enough patience for how long it takes, it is also easily stirred up and can ruin filters. Pool filter sand is heavier and stays put, so the water doesn't cloud up.
You can use the vinegar test on rocks too, pour it on the rock, if it fizzes it means it is made of calcium carbonate and will dissolve in your tank making water cloudy as it comes in contact with acids from fish waste and urine.

Really depends on filter. If you have a canister that filters water before it gets to the pump then you don't have to worry about sand ruining the impeller. If you have a HOB then be prepared to buy impellers.
