I agree with a lot of what is said on this thread.
I have big messy fish, and I change 40% of the water once a week, and clean my Aquaclear 110 and Rena XP3 once a week as well, even though the Rena does not necessarily need it every week. (the AC does get clogged - I have a 90 with two giant barbs in it that should probably be in a 150)
I want to keep the waste moving out of the tank to prevent excess nitrate.
as mentioned, the fish excrete ammonia via their gills and urea into the water, and ammonia is the preferred food for the nitrifying bacteria.
