Have you tried placing a sample of your tank water in a clear glass container to see if it is actually clear?

I also wonder if the air stone is creating so many fine air bubbles that the water doesn't appear clear.

I'm pretty sure its your filter. I never go with the specs of the filter. Even though it says its rated for 500 gallons, the GPH is not enough especially on tanks with large fish. That filter is only putting out 900GPH (not accounting for the distance the pump has to take the water) which means at most you are turning your water over 4 times an hour, but actually it will be less than this. Thats definitely not enough. Shoot for at least 10x and your water should be crystal clear. I do about 15x but I tend to overstock my tanks and they have been crystal clear.

for 58bux you cant beat a hot magnum with micron cartridge, assuming it will fit your tank frame. And it's MICRON so you cant get much finer, as the dirtier it gets the better it works, till it's a trickle.

Heck get 2 for this price on that size tank: http://www.amazon.com/Marineland-PC...TF8&qid=1428536563&sr=8-1&keywords=hot+magnum

Hookone up 3 days before the other, after that one clogs bleach the element for 12 hours rinse/"prime" and water soak it it good for 1 hour, reuse. Rinse and repeat as they say! Alternate accordingly between the 2 units....

Yea, you need more filter. And bigger water changes possibly. I change 75% every week. I have a 2262 and a 2217 on a 125 with smaller fish than you have. It's not that I need more bio-filtration, it's just that Eheim's have kinda low and slow flow. I think that low flowrate is not enough to keep tanks with big fish clean enough. So add another canister, or add something for purely mechanical filtration. Just turn over more water and you'll have a much higher likelihood of achieving clear water.

Another thing you might try is putting a couple layers of Poret foam in the 2262. Search on here for posts by/involving a user named deeda. She has posted all about the things to put in a 2262 to make it more awesome.

+1 i followed deeda's advise (as well as ragin's) on the 2262. Water is crystal clear. I even removed the floss and sponge from the ac110 and used two layers of 30ppi poret foam and purigen.
