Hey.. I have pretty hard water at my house (I'll get the exacts tonight), anyway we have a water softener which I use to use Sodium Chloride with but I switched to Potassium Chloride a few months back. Anyway, is the Potassium Chloride safe for the aquarium? I never even thought about up untill this past week when I was trying to figure out why eels will not live in my tanks. Anyway, I can get water bypassed from it if I need to.. any thoughts?

I have very hard water also. For my oscar tank I have used hard water and softened water (sodium chloride method) for years with no problem either way. No experience with eels, though.

I would bypass the softener if you can. KCl is not natural in their water in that type of concentration.

i am not sure about Potassium Chloride .... i always have used sodium chloride in my softner

We switched to Potasium as the sodium chloride gave us a horrible salt taste in our drinking water.. gotta put my family ahead of the fish on this one ;)

If algae is the only downfall then I'll probably stick with it as I've used it for the past few months and have not had any algae problems.. yet..

Is the potasium ok for the fish though?

A small amount of ptassium will not hurt fish, although I don't know how much K is in your water. Would be very beneficial to aquatic plants.

I'm not sure I agree with putting too much work into avoiding a sodium chl softener. With that supply, you can ad water without even conditioning it for chlorine. I'm sure that there were some imbalances that I didn't watch for, but when I had a water softener, (12 years ago), my fish always did well.
All due respect, Rad.
