Hi,

What type of eels and what else have you got in the tank now?

Did the eels die or just react badly to the tank conditions?

Was it several eels or just one?

They say fish are brain food...I just believe they make us think more...:D

I cannot get eels to survive in my tanks.. I've tried 4 eels and they all died within 2 days.. 1 Fire eel, 2 Tire track eels and 1 peacock eel. I have given up on eels although I wish I could figure out the problem cause I would love to have one.

The other tanks consist of:

55 BW - Violet Goby, Mogurnda Mogurnda, 3 Columbian sharks

30 FW - 3 Black skirt tetras, 2 Sun Catfish

29 FW - 3 Glass Headstanders, 1 Striped Raphael

All of these fish have been living healthy lives for at least 3 months, The Violet Goby i have had for about 2 years now.

A while back I got out of the hobby and sold all of my fish except for the Violet Goby, I never had trouble with my other fish either, bichirs, ABF, Ropefish.

I dunno, I've tried eels in the 30, 29 and a 10 that I use for a grow out, the eels have been from 3" up to 7". I think they are an awesome fish and I would love to be able to keep one. And yes I know they get huge I'm sure someone is going to say that.. lol. I have a 150 at my work that any "big" eels would eventually live in.

We switched to Potasium as the sodium chloride gave us a horrible salt taste in our drinking water.. gotta put my family ahead of the fish on this one

Sounds like your problem in in the regeneration process. Your softner is not rinsing well enough. The salt is only used to regenerate the zeolite and then rinsed clear. There should be no salt residue left behind to cause a change in taste of the water.

No clue.. I talked to the place that installed it as it was only 1 year old when we bought the house. They said as hard as our water was it uses so much salt that there would be a salty taste.. he could of just been BS'ng me but I dunno. He recommended we switch to the Potassium as it leaves a sweet taste.. which it does.

He is full O crap. You shouldn't have a sweet taste either from the Potassium. Your unit is not rinsing enough after the brine solution recharges the zeolite.

It would depend on your unit but there should be an adjustment somewhere to increase the length of your rinse cycle.

Well the upside, I supose, would be there is no need to feed the fish bananas.

A more more broad question, are scaleless fish in general more sensitive to hard water, or water treated for hardness?
