I have water sprite in 3 of my tanks for the last 2 years every tank that it is in these tiny plants appear that look just like duck weed and they will reproduce until the whole tank is covered and the reproduction is rapid a 4 foot tank covered in 3 week are these duckweed like leaves the actual water sprite.

They are waters-sprite (although a photo would help), one way water sprite reproduces is to grow tiny plantlets on its leaves.
You can allow them to float, or, until the roots are strong enough, plant them in the substrate. I would sometimes break off the leaf they grew on, and anchor it in the substrate.
When I had water sprite, every few months I'd end up with enough new plants to take a few bags to my local aquarium club auctions.

With out a pic who knows? But my guess is your plants were infected with the green plague. That is also known as duckweed yes.
