I woke up yesterday and my water was 98. My first thought was a heater malfunction so I unplugged them and have not plugged them back in so they are not the problem. I did a water change and this brought the temp down to 86, inside the house is low 70s so I figured the temp would slowly drop the rest of the way. I will add that its warming up in my area and the wall my tank sits on gets the afternoon sun for hours before the sun goes down. Here is where I get lost, when I went to bed the temp was still at 86 and when I woke up it was and still is at 90. So the temp went up overnight, this makes no sense to me. I have 3 thermometers in the tank and sump and they all read the same, I even took them out and placed them by the house themostat and they quickly matched that temp at 68 early this morning. The only thing that is plugged in are my water pumps. Can they be causing this? They are not hot to the touch and a themometer placed next to the pumps reads 90 like the water.

Any other ideas what could cause this? I am stumped. Thanks

Im guessing 3 crappy stick on thermos?

How long has the tank been setup?

Direct sunlight?

What type of lighting?

Either way i would get a temp controller if i were you, at least than you would gauge a accurate temp!

Try aiming a fan full blast towards the tank, that should help 3-5°

Submerged pumps do heat the water. They keep the temp of my 450 @ about 3 degrees warmer then the room temp.

What kind of pumps you running? Maybe one is going bad

I checked the thermos against my home thermostat and they all match, even if they are off a few degrees the temp still went up over night. I don't think this is the issue. The house temp is low 70's something is causing the water temp to rise. What could be doing this?

If the pump is the only piece of equipment left turned on in your tank then it must be the pump.

You didnt say what type of lighting you have but Im assuming you dont have metal halide. I think thats the only kind that could add significant heat to your tank.

I just placed the thermos in the returns and the water is the same temp as every where else. I have one right next to the pumps and they all read the same. Lights are flouresent and were off at night when the temp went up. The temp in the stand is 76.

Should I do another water change to lower the temp?

I would. I would also see if you can borrow another pump and swap it out to see if the temps lower.

Details on your pump setup would help in giving you some suggestions.
