Water temp is 98

I would start by eliminating one of the two pumps that are in the sump.

The 3 pumps you have consume 290 watts (2x115 and 1x60). Generally, you can assume that these provide the same wattage as heat inside your aquarium. Let's assume you have a 135 gallon tank that is covered and has zero evaporation and no air draft with an ambient temp of 73.

These pumps aren't sufficient to get water from 73 to 98 degrees. If heaters and the sun are added though, that can do it easily. Once temps are in the high 80's or low 90's, the 3 pumps are capable of keeping the temps that high, even in a room that is 73.

Temps going up after dark are sort of tricky. There are 2 potential reasons beyond the obvious one that one of the pumps is putting out a lot more watts than it's rating. 1) rocks and substrate heat easier than water. It's possible that both were above 90 when the water was 86, so when these cooled down, the water absorbed the heat. 2) the wall the tank was on would have dissipated heat into the tank as well.

Well the temp went up again over night, now up to 88. I will unplug one of the pumps and see what happens.

Thanks

Can you feel on or around the pump itself to check for heat? Check impeller and motor housing as well for obstructions. Sounds like the watts from your motors are heating your tank instead of pumping h20

Did you try the fan trick? I know it sounds dumb but in the summer it brings my temp down 3-5°! Just aim it at the glass!

Well through process of elimination it was one of my three pumps. Of course the last one I tested but the temp is dropping down into the normal range.

Thanks for everyones help.

Good to hear.
